Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Condenser, Reflux, 390mm, 24/40 Joint, 250mm Jacket Length. Reflux condenser having an internal coil that is water jacketed. Vapors are condensed both on the coil and the inner wall of the jacket. The top end has a standard taper outer joint and the lower end has an inner drip tip joint. Hose connections have an O.D. of 10mm at the middle serration.

Condenser, High Efficiency, 590mm, 45/50 Joint, 465mm Jacket Length. This unique design combines some of the best features for refluxing in a single condenser. Coolant, introduced into the upper hose connection, fills a large cold finger that is wrapped with coils. After the coolant travels through the coils, it enters the water jacket to maximize cooling surface along the vapor path. Angled take off joint is a standard taper 24/40, and the angled take off joint for the 45/50 size is a standard taper 29/42. Hose connections for the 24/40 size condenser are 10mm at the largest serration. Hose connections for the 45/50 size are 15mm at the largest serration.
